In the past Marina di Campo was a small fishing village, part of the Campo nell'Elba municipality. Campo nell'Elba became independant from the Marciana Marina municipality in 1894 and still today the local coat of arms (the tower) reminds these anciant times. Thanks to its long (2 km) and sandy beach, tourism developped faster than in other villages of Elba and today Marina di Campo is the principal tourist town of the island.

Marina di Campo is caracterized by the old, historical village at the end of the gulf, behind the small harbour, and the long sandy beach with having at its shoulders a beautiful pine tree forest.

Marina di Campo counts numerous hotels, residences, restaurants, shops and services of all kinds.

Worthwhile a visit:
  • The tower: build during the pisean period (12th. century), the tower is located at the end of the village on a steep rock, dominating the whole gulf.

It is also worthwhile doing an excursions into to hills behind Marina di Campo in order to visit the historical rich and enchanting mountain villages of San Piero and Sant'Ilario, famous also for the extraction of the local granit.

On the road leading to the Monte Perone you can visit:

  • The tower of San Giovanni (12th. century): recently rennovated, dominating the whole gulf of Marina di Campo. The tower was an observation outpost against invaders.
  • The church of San Giovanni: it is the largest primitiv christian church on the island. Today only the external walls are still existing. During the summer classical music concerts are organised inside.
  • The church of S. Nicolò at S. Piero in Campo. The belief is that this church was errected on the ruins of an anciant roman temple dedicated to the god Glauco.
  • The church of San Francesco at Sant'Ilario on the beautiful village square.
  • The roman columns: at Seccheto one can still see reminders of the roman period when the granit stones of the island were used for the construction of important buildings of the anciant imperial Rome.
  • Monte Cocchero: here you can admire an 3.000 years old "magic ground", made of blocks of stone forming a half circle and going back to the very first inhabitants of the island. At Seccheto and Fetovaia have recently been found anciant roman furnaces, proving the exploitation of the local iron mines (200 b.C - 200 a.C).

The beaches:
A part the beautiful, long, sandy beach of Marina di Campo we give you here the names of some other famous beaches of the island, some are very crowded, others less:
Seccheto - Cavoli - Fetovaia - Fonza

Pianosa: a special word for Pianosa: until a couple of years ago this was a prison island, it is now possible for limited numbers to visit the island with authorised guides. The island has completely preserved an untouched nature and sea.

During the summer boat trips to Pianosa are organised. A boat excursion to Pianosa usually includes the visit of the Villa Agrippa, the catacombs, the ancient town with its picturesque harbour. You can visit the island even in mountainbike or kayak.
And at the end of the excursion is always some time for a swim in the limpid waters that surround the island.
